The Admin Checklist: Important Updates for Your New Address

When people think about moving house, most of the focus goes on boxes, vans and furniture. But there's another part of moving that's just as important — the admin.

Updating your address with the right organisations ensures you don't miss important letters, lose essential services, invalidate insurance, or face avoidable fines. Done properly, the “digital move” makes settling into your new home far smoother.

Below is a practical checklist of the most important UK admin tasks to handle before and shortly after you move.

1. Update Your Driving Licence and Vehicle Logbook (V5C)

Many people remember to update their driving licence but forget that the vehicle logbook (V5C) is a completely separate document.

Why this matters: Failure to update your V5C can result in a fine of up to £1,000. Vehicle tax reminders and penalty notices are sent to the address on the logbook. Updating one does not update the other.

Both your driving licence and V5C can usually be updated for free online via the DVLA website. Do this as soon as your move date is confirmed.

2. Arrange Broadband and Internet Early

Broadband is one of the most common things people forget — and one of the most inconvenient to be without.

What catches people out: many providers need 2–3 weeks' notice, some properties require an engineer visit, and new-builds and flats may have limited provider options.

Contact your broadband provider as soon as contracts are exchanged or a move-in date is confirmed.

3. Register for Council Tax and the Electoral Roll

Your local council needs to know exactly when you moved in so they can bill you correctly.

Council tax bills are date-specific. Late registration can lead to incorrect charges. Electoral Roll registration helps protect your credit score. Lenders and financial institutions often use Electoral Roll data to verify your identity and address.

Visit your local council's website and register for council tax and to vote at the same time.

4. Set Up Royal Mail Redirection

Even if you're confident you've told everyone about your move, some post will still go to your old address.

Redirection acts as a safety net during the transition, prevents sensitive documents being lost, and gives you time to update banks, doctors and insurers properly.

The Royal Mail Redirection Service can be set up for 3, 6 or 12 months and is strongly recommended for all movers.

5. Update Your GP and Healthcare Records

If you're moving within the same area, you may be able to stay with your current GP. If you're moving further away, you'll need to register with a new practice.

Medical records don't automatically follow you. Prescriptions and referrals can be delayed. Emergency care relies on up-to-date records.

You can find and register with a local GP via the NHS website using their GP finder tool.

6. Notify Your Bank and Financial Providers

Banks, credit card providers and loan companies must have your correct address.

Missing statements or security alerts, fraud checks failing due to address mismatch, and credit score impacts can result if accounts aren't updated.

Update your address with banks and building societies, credit cards, loan and finance providers, and investment or savings accounts. Most updates can be done quickly through online banking.

7. Update Your Insurance Policies

Your address directly affects your insurance risk profile.

Policies to update: home insurance (buildings and contents), car insurance, and travel insurance (if you have annual cover).

Failure to update your address can invalidate a policy. Even moving a few streets away can affect premiums or coverage terms.

8. Inform HMRC and Other Government Services

If you pay tax, receive benefits, or are self-employed, your address must be correct.

Who to notify: HMRC, Child Benefit Office (if applicable), pension providers, and Student Finance (if relevant).

This ensures tax codes, correspondence and payments remain accurate.
